Interview with actress Donna Glee Reim,The oldest in a three generation Screen Actors Guild Family

This is My interview with actress Donna Glee Reim of Massachusetts,She is the mother of Suzanne Prunty along with her daughter Meredith Prunty, All who share the love of acting. Donna shares her IMDB site here along with her ever growing blog http://grannyglee.blog.com 

I conducted the interview with Donna via email from my Maine home. Her experience in front and behind the camera is rather unique and compelling.

1. What inspired you to get into acting and what was your first role in either theater or movies?

First, I am a retired nurse and practiced my profession until I was 72 when I had a major heart attack.  Probably would still be nursing if not for that.  I was looking for something to keep me out of mischief when my daughter Moira came up with the idea of doing background acting.  She found out the details on how to do it and the rest is history.  Shortly after I registered with the casting agent, I was cast in a the background of the TV show “The Brotherhood”  I found out that Jody Purdy was looking for upscale patrons for a restaurant scene so I asked her if I could be in it.  She said that the patrons were supposed to be French.  As i am part French, pushy me told her that I was French so she cast me in the Pink Panther 2. As I received vouchers for that movie, I was SAG eligible so I joined SAG.

2  What was it like to grow up in the Great Depression and did you ever think that you were going to get into movies?
When I was growing up in the Depression in the Dust Bowl, I was always a dreamer.  It was a harsh childhood as not only were there the elements of tornados  and duststorms, but I was one of eight kids and my family was poor.  We made it through the Depression because we all worked.  We grew most of our food and besides farming, Papa did odd jobs to bring in money.  Since I had no kids living close to me, I would create my own entertainment.  That situation also taught me to be self reliant.  I rarely went to movies, but read about them in magazines and the newspaper. I loved Shirley Temple and wanted to be like her.  I never in my wildest dreams ever thought I would be associating with the stars of movies.

3. You played a nurse in Shutter Island,did you go to an audition for that role or did you just fall into the role by chance?
There was a casting call for Shutter Island so I went prepared.  I had read the book and I knew they were looking for nurses so I went in my lab coat and had pictures of me in my uniform.  When I checked in I also said I was a psychiatric nurse in the 50’s.  So, I covered all the angles and sure enough I was one of the many applicants that was picked.

4. You were in Bride Wars and GrownUps, which of these two movies did you like the least?

I loved working on both movies.  Adam Sandler sets are so great.  He is such a kind but funny person.  But, as I was sitting next to Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway for several days, I have to say that I did particulary enjoy that experience.  Kate and Anne are so incredibly beautiful but sweet.  Once Kate looked at me and apparently my necklace was crooked so she straightened it for me.  Also, one morning after an all night shoot, Anne came into the set all smiles, and said, ” Shall we all dance now?”  Both she and Kate had been up all night so I was amazed that they both were so cheerful.  

5, Your daughter Suzanne and your grand daughter Meredith both act, Do all of you sit around the table at home and talk shop and exchange stories about acting?

Well, of course, after a day on a major set, we do like to share our experiences and there are always something interesting going on. That is one reason I enjoy this profession so much.

6. Who are your favorite actors and what movies do you like to watch when your at home?

 I have to admit to being star struck.  I love movies and love associating with the stars.  One thing I do want to mention, is that I have yet to experience any tempermental actors.  I am so impressed with there professionalism.  I have worked with Richard Gere, Leonardo de Caprio, Jeff Bridges, Steve Martin, to name a few but I must say that Mark Ruffalo is one of the actors that I really enjoy working with.  He was incredible on both movies in which I worked :”Shutter Island” and “What wont kill you”  

7. You mentioned you had a great experience with Bill Murray,what was he like and did he make you feel at ease when on Set of Moonrise Kingdom?

Yes, Bill Murray was incredible.  When I was first taken to the set, I was waiting to be placed.  He came over, took my arm and said “Here, I will take you to your seat”. Then during the afternoon while the scene was being shot, he kept us entertained by squirting us with water(we were supposed to be wet because we had come in out of the rain”  Everyone in that scene were joking with the background.  It was a fun day.

8. You worked on GrownUps and I hate You Dad, Did you enjoy working on an Adam Sandler movie?
I adore Adam Sandler and hope he makes more movies in this area.  His sets are so relaxed and fun.  I also was in Grownups 2 so have been in 3 of his movies.  

9 Who is your favorite Director?

I have had such a wonderful time with all the directors, I find it hard to pick one as the favorite.  I have to say that I am particularly fond of Martin Scorcesse as not only was he incredible to work with, but he forgave a faux pas that I made.  It was late night and I was sitting in holding.  The production assistant told me to hurry to the set so of course I went running to where I was supposed to sit.  Well Mr Scorcesse was sitting where I was supposed to sit so I said to him”Marry, you are in my chair”  He hopped up and apologized then everyone started laughing at my boo boo.  I should have just waited or at least addressed him by Mr. Scorcese instead of calling him Marty.  But it was late and I was tired and that is what everyone was calling him during the day so I guess that is why I blurted it out.  Anyway, some directors would have booted my off the set, but he just laughed and later when I asked Mark if I should try to apologize, he said no that Marty thought it was funny too.

10. When did you get your first SAG card?

As I have said before, I got my SAG membership as soon as I was eligible.  Some actors prefer to wait, but as I was already 75, I really didn’t see any sense in waiting.  I love doing background and I keep auditioning for speaking roles, but there are so many fabulous actors out there with so much more experience, I doubt if I will ever get one. But, I would be happy to continue doing background as long as I am able.

This is the first interview with a three generation family of Screen Actors Guild members who love their craft. My interview with Mom, Actress and Producer Suzanne Prunty. Via email,Suzanne Prunty answered several questions via email from my home in Maine.  Here’s her story.

Suzanne Prunty,

1. What or who put the acting spark in you and how long have you been acting? My mom, Donna Glee Reim, was the pioneer in our family. She would come home with great stories and when she suggested my daughter try some acting, I thought it was a great idea and ended up sort of falling into it. Meredith did some theater and took classes at Boston Casting and loved it so much she begged me to let her pursue her dream. Because of this, I spent a lot of time on the production sets of independent films and student films. Invariably I would be asked to be “background” to support the project. I was asked to be a “Teacher” on Sexting in Suburbia for example. One day, my mother was cast in a bar scene in “Missing William” and she asked me to come along.  I ended up on the set too in the same scene. That was a fun day and I realized that being on the sets was a great way to spend time with both Mom and  Meredith since there is a lot of “holding” or “down” time between takes. I also learned to love the vibrant New England actors. They are so interesting and such a wonderful group of talented people.

2. You were 3 hats here in the Prunty Household, Driver for Meredith , Producer of many SAG productions,Where do you find the time? When you love what you are doing, time is not an issue. I enjoy Meredith and Mom when I drive them to auditions and sets. When Meredith is on a set, I am chaperoning as she is a minor. Last summer was a really busy because she got picked out for feature roles in all four of the sets she was on which is very exciting. There is nothing quite like the feeling of seeing her flushed with excitement from being picked out from the crowd for a role. She was fortunate to have spent a lot of her summer on films. Mom usually drives herself to the sets but if I am on the same set (which happens a lot)- we have such fun! Billy Dowd actually cast all of us (Mom Meredith and I) on the same day for “The Way, Way Back”. Talk about a hoot! When I have my “Producer hat” on, it is easy to create the schedule that works for me – usually the weekends.
3. What roles do you like and does your Mom give you advice on acting? I love just being on any set.  I enjoy the people, networking and the food is always so delicious – kudos to Adam Sandler for the amazing food and healthy alternatives. Being cast as a “High Society” type is my favorite because of the beautiful outfits. When I was on “Body of Proof” I had the most gorgeous green dress – I loved it so much I asked Margaret, the wardrobe lady if I could buy it. Unfortunately, it was not allowed but it was  fun wearing it. Mom gave both Meredith and I solid advise . “Your reputation is everything in this business so always be professional, show up a little early, have a good attitude and NEVER back out of a commitment”. We live by those rules. The casting agents have to trust you to be dependable. Also – a good attitude on the set is infectious so spread some fun and laughter around.
4. Your currently producing Cheerleaders vs Redneck Zombies, what gave you the idea for this movie? Zombies are so much fun and everyone is really into them so when my Co-Producer Jason Bachand came to me with the idea, I jumped at it. This is my second SAG production so I am continuing to evolve as a producer. I never went to film school so by doing my own productions, I harness some of the great talent around New England for both Cast and Crew and we learn together. Both of my productions have been under a SAG agreement so it also creates opportunities for the SAG actors to have speaking roles. There are a tremendous amount of SAG actors in the area that don’t always get the opportunity for speaking roles in the big productions that role into town so they usually are eager to be a part of a SAG sanctioned production.
5.When did you first get your SAG card? I had a banner year in 2012 and received all 3 Taft Hartley’s and joined SAG Summer 2012.

6. You worked on Body of Proof, Did you get to work along with Dana Delaney? And what was your role along with your Mom? Body of Proof was the only production that I went solo on. Neither Mom or Meredith were involved although they both submitted. I played a “society type” on 2 episodes and yes, I got to work along side Ms. Delany. She is  “Stunningly Beautiful”  in person and a consummate professional. All the  members of the cast were very friendly. One of the best sets ever to work on. Wish they were still filming in Rhode Island but they ended up moving back to Los Angeles after season 1.

7. Other then acting and producing SAG productions, What is your favorite past time, Cooking,Gardening ,Traveling? I am a bit of a homebody and really enjoy my family time when I am not working. We have a great garden in the back and during the summer I spend a lot of time harvesting produce and then cooking it up. I enjoy long walks and eating healthy.
8. What type of movies do you like to watch, other then the ones your in? I really enjoy all types of movies as well as it is a quality production and love it when I find a “gem” – you know, a movie that doesn’t have a millions of dollars behind it but is quality from start to end. “Bottle Shock” is a great example of a movie that sort of slipped under the radar, but was so interesting and well done that it is worth several viewings.

9.What actor or actress do you admire? . I actually admire most of the actors I have worked with. They make it look easy but it really takes a lot of talent and dedication to deliver results. I will say, however, Kate Winslet is amazing. When I was on the set of “Labor Day” she was such a professional. She stayed in character the entire time and was willing to do as many times as was required to get the perfect footage. It was very hot the day we filmed and she never complained or asked for unnecessary breaks.

10. What types of movies do you like being casted in if you had a choice? I am a bit partial to to the productions that are smaller because  there is more camera time. Sometimes on the huge sets, you are lost in the shuffle. For example. both Mom and I were “upscale shoppers” on “In your Eyes” with just a few other Background Actors and we ended up in a critical scene.

11. How long does the acting go back in the Prunty Family? Mom started it – if we have actors before that – I am not aware of it. So for now – it is just the three generations.

12.  Do you like watching reality TV? I like Dancing with the Stars.  I love Tom Bergeron and his jokes and the dancers are so amazing. I have been working with my high school friend Olympic Diver Greg Louganis to try and get him on the show for the past 4 years. We created a Facebook group and have been campaigning for him.  Greg would be phenomenal so keeping my fingers crossed. In addition to DWTS, I am going to be watching an episode of “MTV Made”  as Meredith ended up being a guest on one of the shows. She was a guest celebrity at The East Coast National Beauty Pageant and there was a young lady who wanted to be made into a contestant and since her platform was domestic violence – she ended up speaking to Meredith about Meredith’s anti-bullying efforts. I am not sure when it is going to air but I am keeping my eye out for it.

13. What do you think about the growing film industry in Massachusetts? The growing industry is great for our economy. I am fully supportive of the movement and the tax breaks Massachusetts offer.  I feel that as a producer, I can help develop talent by creating opportunities for a lot of local actors to gain experience. Los Angeles has a huge pool of actors to draw upon, if we are going to meet the needs of the movies that come to town we need to  continue to grow our talent and resources.

This is my first in the series of interviews with 2 families that have a lot of great talent. My first interview is with 17 year old Ashley Tramonte of Marshfield,Mass. She is currently working on Cheerleaders Vs. Redneck Zombies. Her most recent credits are GrownUps2 with Adam Sandler , The Way Way Back movie with Steve Carell, The Rude the Mad and the Funny and Baskmask.  Clearly a young actress with a great start to her acting career. Via email from my Maine home,I asked Ashley a series of questions about her dreams of being an actress.

Actress Ashley Tramonte

1. When did you get the acting bug and what was your very first role in Movies?

I first got the acting bug when I was about 11 years old and from there I kept following my dream, My first role was a featured extra in ‘Sexting In Suburbia’ as a cheerleader.

2. You currently attend Marshfield High School,are you currently enrolled in any theater productions at school?
I am not enrolled in any of the theater courses but I do go to the shows and support the schools actors.

3. Who inspires you with your acting and what actress or actor would you like to have a scene with?
My family is what inspires me when I see how happy they get for me I can’t help but smile. As every girl you ask that question I am sure she will answer it with…. CHANNING TATUM!
4. What is type of movies do you like and what type of movies do you like to have roles in?
I really like comedies and dramas but my all time favorite would be romance. I have had roles in a few genres but I would like to say my favorite genre to work in is drama.
5.You recently had a role in Steve Carell’s movie Way Way Back Movie, Did you ever work with him before and did you get to ask Steve Carell any questions about acting?
I never worked with him before but he has a General Store here in my town and I go there here and there and on set I had time to talk to him about Marshfield and how much he enjoys it here. Actually funny tidbit, we were driving (me and my mom) and I saw a guy that looked familiar but I just couldn’t figure out who it was then when the light turned green we drove past him and I was like “steve…?” then he drove past us further up and he was staring into the car smiling at me. It was a couple days after working on the way way back.
6.In the movie Backmask,what role did you have in the movie?
I played a rave party teen.
7. Where would you like to be in 5 years from now? Are you planning on entering college and continue your acting?
I would like to be out in California acting and having a degree in cosmetology that is what I am going to college for. 
8. What did your Mom say to when you showed an interest in acting? What were her concerns?
From the beginning my mom was very supportive she took me on auditions and stood by me every step of the way.
9.You had a featured extra role in The Rude the Mad and the Funny,what was that role and how did you get casted for it?
I was a contest judge and I met the director David Garfield at an event here in Marshfield and he gave me the role.
10. Would you rather do roles in movies or television?
Personally, I like both but Television is more fun because you go to school and everybody says that they saw you on TV. Sexting in Suburbia came out Jan. 14 2012 and people are still watching it and telling me they saw me. Its a adrenaline rush.
11. What characters do you like to play?
I like to play any character I like to explore different personalities.
12  When your not acting,what else do you enjoy doing?
Spending time with my family, because as Italians we are very family oriented and are always together.
13.  Who is your favorite Director?
I would have to say my favorite Director is John Stimpson he makes the most touching and moving lifetime movies I have ever seen and they all have a meaning I love working with him I filmed two movies with him and hope to have more in the future.
